More banner brackets installed on street lamps downtown

More brackets for more banners will help draw more people to downtown Livingston, city leaders hope. 

In a joint program involving a number of downtown organizations, city government and the Livingston Area Chamber of Commerce, additional banner brackets were installed on downtown street lamps downtown last week, Karla Pettit, chairwoman of Livingston’s Urban Renewal Agency, said Tuesday. 

BPA bake sales scheduled; state competition placements listed

The BPA (Business Professionals of America) will hold their annual bake sales Friday, March 25, at the Bank of the Rockies in Clyde Park at 9 a.m. and at the Old Wilsall Hardware Deli in Wilsall Saturday, March 26, starting at 8:30 a.m. Get your homemade goodies for Easter and support the Shields Valley BPA members who will be attending the National Leadership Conference in Boston.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana Gov. Steve Bullock has offered to pay back some of the costs of using a government-owned airplane to get to campaign events that coincide with state business, but some Republican lawmakers say that is not good enough and he should cover more of the bill.

Previous governors have used the plane as part of their electioneering but insist that those trips are secondary to previously scheduled official business.

State to re-try Augusta-area man in neighbor's death

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — State prosecutors want to re-try Joseph Campbell in the October 2013 shooting death of a neighbor in a rural subdivision southwest of Augusta.

Prosecutors filed a motion in District Court in Helena asking for a new trial date, the attorney general's office said Wednesday.

Supreme Court rejects appeal to close Montana primaries

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected an appeal seeking to close Montana's Republican primary elections to only GOP-registered voters.

That means the June 7 primaries will be open to all registered voters.

The nation's high court denied without comment Wednesday the appeal by the Montana Republican Party and eight county central committees. The court takes up very few petitions it receives, but in this case, Justice Anthony Kennedy had requested more information about the issue.

9 legislative candidates disqualified after failing to file

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana officials have disqualified nine candidates for the Montana Legislature for not filing required campaign documents.

The candidates removed from the ballot Tuesday include four Democrats, four Republicans and one Libertarian.

The purging leaves three incumbent legislators without opponents in either the primary or general election. They are Republican Rep. Mark Noland of Bigfork, Democratic Rep. Bryce Bennett of Missoula and Democratic Sen. Jon Sesso of Butte.
