New superintendent wants students ready for 21st century

Building relationships between schools, businesses and the community are some of the goals of new Livingston School District Superintendent Don Viegut.

Viegut, who moved here from the Wausau, Wisconsin area, said first of all he’s been getting to know people in Livingston and building relationships. A large whiteboard in his South B Street office shows a tangle of interconnected circles and arrows, outlining organizations, people and ideas. 

Couple removes clamped tire at Boiling River, detained in Emigrant

Two Ontario residents were detained by law enforcement after officials say they removed a tire fitted with a wheel clamp at the Boiling River and traveled to Park County the following day.

Dylan LaTour and Annalisa Malinine, both of Ottawa, Ontario, were detained by Park County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jason Hopkin on Friday, after a caller reported the couple were behind the Emigrant General Store’s car wash trying to remove a boot from one of their vehicle’s tires.

County votes on Extension office, Clyde Park issues

The Park County Commission met today to discuss and make decisions on several items. Addressed at the meeting were:

• The approval of a three-year lease with the Montana State University-Park County Montana Extension office. The biggest change in the lease was the addition of the ability of the county to terminate the contract due to lack of funding. Both parities are required to give 180 days notice of desire to discuss contract changes. The Extension office rent is to remain at $1,200 per month.

County seeks grant for ‘brownfields’ areas

The Main Hotel, KPRK Radio Station and the Yellowstone Grain Elevator have at least one thing in common — they are potential catalysts for an Brownfields-Area Environmental Protection Agency grant.

Brownfields are properties that may have hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants present.

Blazes in the U.S. West have blocked a major route to Yellowstone National Park during tourist season and tore through a mobile home park in Utah, leaving residences destroyed and people displaced.

Bullock proposes tax waivers, credits for businesses

HELENA, Mont. — Gov. Steve Bullock is proposing a tax-relief program for businesses that includes waivers and credits that he will present to the 2017 Montana Legislature if he is re-elected.

The tax plan is meant to encourage companies to grow and to create higher-wage jobs in Montana, an issue that his Republican opponent, Greg Gianforte, has hammered on in his campaign to unseat the Democratic incumbent.

Bullock was in Billings to promote the plan Wednesday, after stopping at businesses in Great Falls and Bozeman on Tuesday.

BISMARCK, N.D. — The profile of a famous Sioux warrior that has adorned North Dakota's highway signs for nearly a century is being quietly replaced by a rectangle.

One descendant of Marcellus Red Tomahawk said it "tears my heart out" that officials decided to swap out the markers featuring his great-great-grandfather with versions displaying the nondescript North Dakota outline, an homage to the upcoming 100th birthday of the state's transportation agency.

Teachers union sues Lockwood schools over 10 eliminated jobs

BILLINGS, Mont. — A teachers union has filed an unfair labor practices complaint against the Lockwood Schools district in Billings over the elimination of 10 paraprofessional positions in May.

The complaint filed Tuesday with the Montana Department of Labor disputes district officials' contention that the cuts were forced because of budget constraints.

In the complaint, the Lockwood Paraprofessionals Association cites about $86,000 in raises given to administrators and maintenance or custodial staff and other costs.
