Whoopin’ it up in Park County

Park County competitors did their part in making Gardiner’s Upper Yellowstone Rodeo and the Wilsall Rodeo just that much more enjoyable.

Wilsall’s Lane Lahaye and Gardiner’s Shai McDonald stole the show with a combined five top-five finishes, but a number of other area competitors padded their pocketbooks over the weekend.

McDonald won the Junior Barrel racing crown and added a fourth-place finish in Junior Breakaway roping in Gardiner.

At Wilsall, McDonald added a third in Junior Barrels.

For Lahaye, 10.1 seconds was the magic number.

That was the time the Shields Valley High School senior used in putting a runner-up finish in Tie-down Roping at Gardiner and a fourth in the event at Wilsall.

At Gardiner, Lahaye set the standard in the event during Friday’s performance.

Saturday, Molt’s Hank Hollenback passed up the Rebel standout with a time of 9.9 seconds to pocket the first-place check of $637. Lahaye earned $477 for second.

At Wilsall, Wolf Creek’s Sam Levine won the Tie-Down title with a time of 8.9 seconds to win $498.20; Shepherd’s Treston Vermandahl was second at 9 seconds to win $373.65; Jackson, Wyo., cowboy Ty Hendrick earned $249.10 with a third-best time of 9.6 seconds; and Lahaye pocketed $124.55.

McDonald cruised to victory in Junior Barrel’s at Gardiner, earning the winner’s check of $201 with a time of 17.13 seconds.

Bozeman’s Fallon Parker was second in 17.32 seconds to win $151.

In the Junior Breakaway competition, Arlee’s Callie Otoupalik was the champion, posting a time of 2.5 seconds to win $268; Billings’ Culley Morgan was second in 3.5 seconds to win $201; Pompeys Pillar’s Elizabeth French earned $134 with a third-place time of 4.2 seconds; and McDonald won $67 with a time of 4.8 seconds.

At Wilsall, Choteau’s Paige Rasmussen won the Junior Barrels title in 18.06 seconds to pocket $134.40, Three Forks’ Tayla Moeykens was second in 18.14 seconds to win $100.80, and McDonald added to her weekend total of $$335.20 with a third-place time of 18.36 seconds to win $67.20.

During Friday’s Gardiner Rodeo, Pray’s Gayleen Malone and Milee Dailey shined in Barrel Racing.

Malone, Milee’s mother, posted a time of 16.96 seconds to take the first-day lead, and Dailey was second with a time of 16.98 seconds.

But Saturday, Corvallis’ Kelsey Trexler, Choteau’s Shelby Rasmussen, Nunton’s Honora Roe, Billings’ Valee Cooley, and Kalispell’s Catie Birk all passed up the times of Pray’s two standouts.

Rexler won the first-place check of $821 with a time of 16.67 seconds, and Rasmussen was second, winning $68 with a time of 16.77 seconds.

Malone was sixth, winning $141.

In Steer Wrestling competition at Wilsall, Wilsall’s Weston Zupan was fourth with a time of 7.2 seconds to claim $124.55. Helena’s Kane Cartwright won the event in 5.6 seconds to capture the winner’s check of $498.20.

Livingston’s Travis Winters rounded out Park County’s success over the weekend, teaming with Billings’ Tanner Sorge to finish fourth in Team Roping at Gardiner.

The tandem each won $184 with a time of 7.3 seconds.

Casey Good and Casey Nelson of Otto, Wyo., won the event in 6.5 seconds to split the winner’s check of $1,472.
