Voters to decide on Wilsall Fire District mill levy request

Jean Skillman

The Park County Commission has approved a mill levy request on the Nov. 8 ballot for the Wilsall Fire District/Fire Department for buying or maintaining fire protection facilities/real property, including emergency response apparatus.

The five mills the Fire District is requesting is in addition to the 14.559 mills already assessed to the district. The annual impact on taxpayers would be $6.75 on a home valued at $100,000 and $13.50 for a home valued at $200,000.

The request is for funding operating costs, funding operation and maintenance of the fire station, acquisition of new equipment and upkeep of current equipment, funding training for volunteers and staff, funding any fire district staff, and funding a capital improvements account.

“The last (mill levy) request was in 2001 and pays for the Fire Hall plus some of our other expenses,” Wilsall Fire District treasurer Alan Johnstone said in an e-mail. “We average about a $5,000 to $10,000 shortfall every year. So far, this has been covered by our fundraisers and by donations. We feel it would be appropriate to have more secure funding to cover that shortfall, especially as we may not always have some of our larger donors.”
