Park High School’s Model United Nations Club recently returned from the 53rd annual Montana Model United Nations Conference.

The conference was held at the University of Montana on Nov. 19 and 20. It was attended by 380 students from 17 Montana and Idaho high schools, according to a Model UN press release.

At Model UN conferences students participate in simulations of United Nations sessions, debating negotiating, caucusing, drafting, and voting on resolutions that address world problems.

The Park High School students represented Turkey and Peru.

Each student participated in one of five committees: International Organization for Migration, General Assembly First Committee (security issues), General Assembly Second Committee (economic and financial), General Assembly Third Committee (social, cultural, and humanitarian), and Security Council, the release stated.

The conference began on Monday, Nov. 19, with opening ceremonies and a keynote address by Anna Conley, professor of Political Science at the University of Montana.

Students then met in their committees from late Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon. A list of the topics each committee considered is posted online at Each committee had a faculty guest speaker.

On Monday evening, students attended a Trivia of Politics where they demonstrated their knowledge of international issues and enjoyed cookies.

Individual, country, and school awards were announced during the closing ceremonies on Tuesday. Five high school seniors were awarded scholarships to attend UM.

Park High School junior Adelle Welch won a Distinguished Delegate award.

Other Park High School students attending the conference were Eva Molina and Buddy Murphy.
