Spelling bee to be held next week

The Park County annual spelling bee will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the ballroom at the Shane Lalani Center for the Arts.

The annual event is held for students in fourth through eighth grades for students that are homeschooled or enrolled in public school and private schools. The event is sponsored by Park County, the Park County Community Foundation and the Shane Center.

“Each of the schools that have fourth- through eighthgraders do their own spelling bee and send a number of students based on how large they are,” said County Superintendent of Schools Jo Newhall.

For example, Newhall said Sleeping Giant Middle School sends eight students, and Pine Creek School sends two. She said there are no students from Cooke City this year.

Overall, 25-30 students usually participate, Newhall said.

She said that the winner goes on to the state spelling bee, and the winner of that event will represent Montana in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The past two years, Aidan Veress of Gardiner School has represented Montana in Washington, D.C.

“The Park County Spelling Bee is a great example of our community coming together to celebrate and honor academic success,” said Gavin Clark, executive director of the Park County Community Foundation.
