Shields Valley students receive awards, scholarships

Scholarships and awards given to Shields Valley High School and Junior High students at the May 9 Academic Awards Night were:

Students inducted into the National Honor Society were Joseph Bennett, Lauren Flatt, Ashley George and Colton Jones.

Educational Improvement awards went to Colton Leahy, Shawn VonHeeder, Kayla Johnson and Emma Woodruff.

 Hannah Butler, Colton Silverwood, Kade Paschke and Morgan Raw received certificates for perfect attendance.  

Students receiving Citizenship awards were eighth graders Jules Croston and Zachary Danielson; and seventh graders Morgan Fairchild  and Lyom Bullard.

Two Shields Valley students who competed for and placed in state Math awards in the top 15 percent of the state are Regan Hanson and Patrick Blair.

The BPA (Business Professionals of America) Member of the Year is Joseph Bennett.

Wendy’s High School Heisman Award went to Brock Peterson.

Brock Peterson received a $1,000 scholarship from the Clyde Park Community Scholarship Committee.

The Wilsall Scholarship Committee gave $800 scholarships to the following  seniors: Colton Jones, Ashley George and Brock Peterson.

The Shields Valley Foundation gave scholarships to Brock Peterson and Colton Jones.    

The $1,000 Livingston Rotary Club scholarship went to Brock Peterson. He also won the $500 Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship.

Brock Petersen was given the Barbara Thornson Scholarships for $500, renewable for each successfully completed semester.

A $3,500 Goodworks Scholarship went to Cheyenne Darkow.

The next three awards are faculty choice awards.

“I Dare You” Awards for character and leadership were given to Brock Peterson and Marissa Marshall.

Ashley George and Brock Peterson won the Babe Ruth Awards for sportsmanship and the True Grit Awards went to Marissa Marshall.

Student Council Officers for next year are Jen Fairchild, president; Brook Russell, vice president; Mollie Engle, secretary-treasurer; and Jack Marshall, delegate at large.

Recent memorials given to the Wilsall Cemetery were for Ken Bailey and  Art Beebe from Ellen David.
 

Events

Kindergarten graduation is at 8:10 a.m. Thursday, May 11, in the Wilsall school gym. Awards will be given in the first grade at 8:40 a.m., in second grade at 9:05 a.m. and third grade at 9:30 a.m. The elementary track meet starts at 10 a.m. and runs until about 2 p.m. at the Wilsall football field. Awards for fourth grade will be given at 2:20 p.m., for fifth grade at 2:45 p.m. and for sixth grade at 3:15 p.m.

The FFA Banquet starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the the gym in Clyde Park.

In time for Mother’s  Day, Leyde’s Mountainview Gardens, home of pampered plants, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, starting Friday, May 12. They are closed on Sundays and Mondays. They will also be closed the weekend of June 2-4. There will be gorgeous baskets, annuals for pot stuffers, perennials, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and more. They will try to get special ordered plants, as requested, and meet special appointments for those who can’t come during regular hours.

Leyde’s Mountainview Gardens is at 254 Chicken Creek Rd.,  Clyde Park. Follow the signs to find the home of “Pampered Plants.” For more information call them at 686-4716.

An Adolescent Immunization Clinic is planned for 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Shields Valley High School parking lot in Clyde Park and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Shields Valley Elementary School parking lot in Wilsall. The event is  Wednesday, May 17, and for students ages 11 to 18. Parents must accompany elementary students. Consent forms are available on the Shields Valley School web site nurses tab and will go home in the Thursday folders this week.

A 90th birthday celebration for Myron Stutterheim is planned from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday,  May 13, at the Shields Valley Bible Church in Clyde Park

The Shields Valley Book Club meets at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Shields River Lutheran Church in Wilsall. The book being discussed this month is “Astoria” by Peter Stark.

The Shields Valley Athletic Awards Banquet for high school and junior high students is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, in Clyde Park.

The Shields Valley Senior Citizen potluck starts at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at the senior center in Wilsall. There will be special music and readings.

The Wilsall Vets Club and Auxiliary will be looking for help to put up the flags a the cemetery Friday, May 26. Mark your calendar and come help at 8 a.m.
 

Cards

The Clyde Park Bridge Club met May 3 at the Eyman home with Loraine Eyman as hostess. Prize winners were Joyce Sarrazin, high; and Shirley Wilson, bingo.

Wilsall Women’s Pinochle Club met Monday afternoon at the Shields Valley Senior Center. Prize winners were Linda Wilson, high; Jean Landers, low; and Marie Smith, traveling.

School Schedule

May 11: Kindergarten graduation, elementary awards and elementary track meet start at 8:10 a.m. See above for schedule of events.

May 12-13: The District Track Meet is in Bozeman.

May 15-17: The sixth graders are on a Yellowstone trip.

May 16: The high school and junior high athletic awards banquet is at 6 p.m. in Clyde Park.

May 18: The  fourth graders are on a trip to Daily Lake.
