At their biggest track and field meet of the season so far with 16 total schools in attendance, the Shields Valley Rebels had plenty of competition against which to test themselves at the Manhattan Invitational in Bozeman on Saturday.

Of the 16 schools at Saturday’s meet, five were Class B schools, which Shields Valley doesn’t normally have to compete against.

Brock Peterson was the only Rebel to place on the boys’ side. His best performance was in the triple jump, where he finished second with a jump of 39-04. That jump was still over a foot short of the winning jump, but was still five and a half inches better than third place.

Peterson also placed in the 200-meter dash. He finished eighth in that event with a time of 24.62.

The Rebel girls had a number of team members place in individual events, as well as both of their relay teams.

Kylie Kerkaert had the Rebels’ best individual performance in the 100, where she placed second with a time of 13.78. That time was .52 behind the first-place time. Jen Fairchild also placed in the 100, finishing eighth with a time of 14.24. Fairchild finished ninth in the 200 with a time of 29.36.

Continuing her streak of placing in all four individual events in which she competes to three weeks, Kayla Gagen again placed in the 800, 100 hurdles, javelin and high jump.

Gagen’s best finish was in the 800, where her time of 2:39.03 was good enough for third place. She was fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.66, sixth in the high jump, and her throw of 86-11 was seventh best in the javelin.

The Rebel girls’ relay teams placed in both the 4x100 and the 4x400. The 4x400 team’s time of 4:26.83 was just over a second behind the top time in the event, giving Shields Valley a second-place finish in the long relay. The Rebels were sixth in the short relay with a time of 55.55.

This Friday will be Shields Valley’s next meet. The Rebels will travel to Columbus to take part in the Big Timber Invite after two consecutive meets in Bozeman.

The Rebels will be back in Bozeman next week, however, for the Manhattan Christian Invite scheduled for April 30.
