Atticus Tate, 2, is pictured helping make signs for Porchfest, which will take place Sunday starting at 2:30 p.m. on Yellowstone Street, Clark Street and Third Street between Lewis Street and Geyser Street.

This Sunday, Livingston will see its first-ever Porchfest — a community music festival that, rather than go through the hassle of erecting stages, will showcase local bands right on front porches in a Livingston neighborhood.

At 2:30 p.m., some streets will close, the cars will stop — and, at 3 p.m., the music will begin. Between then and 8 p.m., at least 21 bands will take to five different porches to perform. The festival is free, for both attendees and musicians — which means, the musicians aren’t getting paid.

“People should definitely plan on tipping musicians,” said Nadia Grabiner, head of the Porchfest Planning Committee.

“People are also welcome to bring instruments,” said Grabiner, “so that if you find musicians that you like, you can all play on a street corner somewhere.”

Porchfest is new to Livingston, but has been happening in other cities nationwide for some years.

Grabiner said she first came across the idea when she stumbled upon a Porchfest while visiting her brother in Boston.

She always wanted to bring the idea back to Montana, but she was living in Gardiner and figured she couldn’t pull it off in so small a town. She lives in Livingston now, and decided that the time had come to do it “because The Hoot wasn’t happening this year,” said Grabiner.

However, she said, “It’s never ever been our intention to replace The Hoot.”

“It’s just a continuation of out free-music-loving spirit,” she said.

The festival will feature local favorites Sean Devine and The Sleepless Elite. Also among the bands playing are Raina Wallace, Marcedes Carroll, Polly Vinyl Art Thereminist, Carlynne & Markondrums, Blake Brightman, 3 Miles to Clyde, AJ Scaff, Steph Yeager, Picken’ Pear, Virginia Warner, Clea Toll, Emma and The Edge, Nico Holthaus, Benson’s Landing String Band, and more.

The porch-stage locations are 310 W. Lewis St., 315 W. Clark St., 227 S. Third St., 221 S. Yellowstone St., and 211 S. Yellowstone St. The band schedules for these locations can be found at www.facebook.com/PorchfestLivingstonMT.

The streets will be closed between 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
