Park County residents are coming in on the last days of the  Rural Fire District #1 Trustee election Tuesday  and three people are vying for the only open position.

Dan Skattum, Jeffrey Schoenen and Kevin Funk are running for the three year position.

Schoenen, 52 said he began working for the Great Falls fire department in 1992 and from there worked at the Livingston Fire Department for a number of years before retiring in 2013.

While working for the city in 2011, he began sitting on the rural fire board to sort of get a sense of what the two entities could work on together and how their training could be more similar across the board.

“We have made some great strides with training,” Schoenen said.

He said he just wants to provide the best possible services for the people of Park County.

Skattum, 56, also has experiences with emergency services which includes his experience working for Department of Transportation as well as a volunteer firefighter for Paradise Valley.

He was also part of the 2011 state legislature, where he said he focused a lot on budgets.

“I was known for being very fiscally responsible with other people’s money and I hope to do the same in this position,” Skattum said.

He said he was on the board in the past but had some difficulty attending meetings, however he hopes to rectify that in the future with communication if he is elected.

Kevin Funk, 56, the other candidate was unable to be reached for comment before publishing this article.

The ballots have been sent out to residents and the election closes Tuesday. People may come into the City-County building in the Clerk and Recorder’s office between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. to turn in the ballot.
