A recent graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in Davis, California has joined the staff of Livingston’s Colmey Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Jennifer Keithly, 31, who started her new position this summer, has a mixed-animal practice, covering everything from dogs and cats to sheep, goats, cattle, llamas and alpacas, and even animals that cluck.

“I like chickens too,” Keithly said during a recent interview at the veterinary facility, where she joins Dr. Duane Colmey and Dr. Steve Chase.

While this is her first job as a veterinarian, it’s not her first time working with animals, nor for being in Montana.

After getting her undergraduate degree  in animal science at California State University in Chico, California, Keithly earned her Master of Science in Animal and Range Sciences at Montana State University in 2010. She then returned home to Kelseyville, California, to manage her parents’ cattle, sheep and goat ranch, all while also grooming dogs and cats at a shop there.

“It was a little bit nuts for a while,” she chuckled.

While studying in Montana, she came to love the area.

“I was very excited to return,” she said, adding of her new position in Livingston, “Everybody has been very welcoming and very nice … I love everybody that I work with.”

The veterinarian also said she loves working with ranchers on the jobs that take her to their places, where she does cattle pregnancy evaluations, vaccinations, brucellosis testing, and breeding soundness evaluations.

“I like working on multiple species,” she said. “It’s fun, it keeps my brain engaged.”

Her hobbies outside the work place include “anything that’s outside,” she said. She lives on a 15-acre place where she tends sheep and goats, and also loves horseback riding and snowboarding.

Oh — and spending time with her fiancé, Chris Uhrig, a mechanic at Livingston’s Yellowstone Imports, to whom she just got engaged — “after eight and a half years of dating,” she laughed.

Keithly can be reached at Colmey Veterinary Hospital at 222-1700.
