Maynard J. “Babe” Young, 85, of Livingston, passed away on Monday, Jan. 13, 2020.

Babe was born on Sept. 3, 1934, in Belfield, North Dakota. He was the youngest child of Lyle V. and Alice E. (Richard) Young. Babe affectionately earned his nickname from his sister, Inace. When Babe was 5, the family moved from North Dakota to Montana, they eventually settled in Livingston. Babe was a graduate of Park High School and followed his graduation taking courses at Montana State College, now Montana State University, in Bozeman. He worked a few different jobs, including for Yellowstone Park. He had a childhood sweetheart, Nadine McCarthy, and they would go on to be married on Feb. 11, 1956. He and Nadine would have celebrated their 64th anniversary this coming February.

Babe and Nadine made Livingston their home, and Babe would eventually take a position with the railroad as his father had. He worked his way up to a machinist position, retiring when the railroad left town in 1984. Babe was also a gifted gunsmith. He served many area gun enthusiasts and would do the rounds at area gun shows buying, selling and trading for his personal collection.

Babe was a hard worker who did all he could to provide for his family. He enjoyed the outdoors, liked to go hunting and fishing, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. We remember Babe walking to work every day, taking the B Street underpass over to the rail yards. When he was younger, he enjoyed exercise and was always very fit. Even though you may be gone from us in this world, you will forever be in our hearts …

Babe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nadine; his children, Denise (Kevin) Hoyem of Billings, Matthew Young of Livingston, and Michael (Jo) Young of Livingston; grandchildren, Bryan (Flavia) Hoyem, Andrew Hoyem, Josh Nierstheimer, Chelsea Hildestad, Jace, Rylan and Kellan Young; great-grandchildren, Connor Steward and Aryanna Hoyem; brother, James Vernon Young; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Young; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Babe was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Alice Young; brother, Richard Young; sister, Inace Spannring and her husband, Ray; sister-in-law, Evelyn Young; and halfbrother, Bryce Young.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring. An announcement will be made once plans are finalized.
