Remember that immigrant children are still children

Editor:

Two months ago, Attorney General Jefferson Sessions announced a new Trump administration policy, one that separates children from parents at the southern border, even for those seeking asylum. Just last week, Sessions insisted that it is necessary, even Biblical, to separate children from their parents.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “highly stressful experiences, like family separation, can cause irreparable harm, disrupting a child’s brain architecture and affecting his or her short- and long-term health. This type of prolonged exposure to serious stress — known as toxic stress — can carry lifelong consequences for children.”

If you oppose Trump’s zero-tolerance immigration policy, which inflicts irreparable harm on innocent children, you must contact our members of Congress (Congressman Greg Gianforte 202-225-3211; Senator Steve Daines 406-587-3446; Senator Jon Tester 406-586-4450 — or send messages through their websites) and the White House (202-456-1111) to express your outrage and demand an immediate end to this policy.

We can and must find a kinder, more compassionate and moral solution to deal with families seeking asylum. We can and must remember that immigrant children are still children; they need our protection, not prosecution.
