Editor:

Wild rivers are Montana’s lifeblood, it struck me this afternoon as I stood thigh deep in the Yellowstone River, watching a modest but precious Yellowstone Cutthroat swim back to its watery domain. Standing in the river next to me, my canine fishing buddy nods his head in agreement, as do the thousands of anglers, kayakers, rafters, tubers, painters, rock-skippers, diapered waders who played on the Yellowstone, the Gallatin, the Madison this glorious holiday weekend. And yes, locals and visitors alike marveled this weekend at the spectacular scenery and wildlife that inhabit and surround those wild rivers, that magnify the imperative that we save these special ecosystems. Preserving our wild and scenic rivers is preserving our Montana way of life. Selfishly, owning Sweetwater Fly Shop will also kind of suck if we allow our ecological inheritance to deteriorate.

The Headwater Security Act would be a huge step in the right direction. I’ll let others lay out the nitty-gritty of the Act and of Wild and Scenic River designations. Our beloved wild rivers, our playgrounds and our havens, are under constant threat in Montana and around the world. Please contact Representative Greg Gianforte and Senators Jon Tester and Steve Daines and urge them to support the Headwater Security Act.

Montana’s rivers thank you, as do her trout and whitefish, as do her otters, eagles, osprey, moose, deer, elk….
