The Big Timber volleyball team took to the court twice last week, and although they lost at home to Red Lodge Thursday, Oct. 1, they beat Manhattan on the road in a five-set thriller Tuesday, Sept. 29.

After winning the first two sets over the Tigers in Manhattan, Big Timber looked like it would blow a huge lead by losing the third and fourth sets, the fourth set going to extra points, but the Herders were able to salvage the win by taking the fifth and final set (25-17, 25-17, 17-25, 24-26, 15-11).

In a match this close, defense is always key and four Herders finished with double-digit digs.

Leichelle Wood had a team-high 17 of Big Timber’s 82 digs. Madilyn Emter added 16 digs, Holly Emter had 13 digs and TediJo Todd contributed with 12 digs.

Todd, Wood and Aly Rosteck each led the Herders with three aces each. Ashley Gunickson, Hannah Wheeler, Holly Emter and Mesa King all finished with one ace each to give Big Timber 13 in the match.

Holly Emter had the Herder offense going with her sets, assisting on 26 of the team’s 40 kills. Wood and Todd each had an assist, but Wood did the majority of her work on the receiving end of those sets. She had 13 kills to lead the team.

Rosteck finished the match with nine kills, and King had seven.

After Tuesday’s win, Big Timber returned home to face Red Lodge, losing in straight sets (25-10, 25-22, 25-17).

Rosteck and Holly Emter had two aces each in the loss, and King was a force at the net with three blocks. It was Wood again who led the Herders in kills. She finished the match with seven of the team’s 24 kills.

The Herders are a busy team this week with three matches. They played in Columbus Tuesday Oct. 6,, and will be in Three Forks Thursday, Oct. 8. The Herders return to Big Timber Saturday, Oct. 10, for a match against Jefferson.
