Lady Herders off to districts as No. 2 seed

Following nine days off between matches, Big Timber played their final two volleyball matches of the regular season — losing to Joliet then beating Townsend in the regular-season finale — and now prepare for the district tournament, which begins this week in Belgrade.

The Lady Herders faced the Joliet J-Hawks Thursday, Oct. 22, at home and lost in straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-14).

The J-Hawks out-killed Big Timber 27-18 in the match, and two players — Libby Zorn and Holly Nowak accounted for 19 of those 27 kills.

Leichelle Wood was again the Lady Herders kills leader as she has been all season. Wood had half, or nine, of the team’s 18 kills. Holly Emter and TediJo Todd were a big part of the Herder offense as well with three kills each.

In addition to being out-killed, Big Timber fell victim to 18 aces by Joliet servers and nine blocks.

Big Timber finished the match with just eight aces, and Holly Emter was a big part of that with five of the eight. Madilyn Emter added two aces, and Hannah Wheeler recorded the team’s final ace. Mesa King had Big Timber’s only two blocks.

The Lady Herders were also at home for their second match of the week when they beat Townsend in straight sets Saturday, Oct. 24, (25-9, 25-17, 25-20).

The Lady Herders dominated Townsend, and Wood had another huge offensive night.

She was more than half of the team’s offense with 14 of the team’s 26 kills. Wheeler and Aly Rosteck tied for second on the team with three kills, and Wheeler earned her three kills on just seven total attacks.

Todd, King and Carrie Lehman each finished the match with two kills. Todd also added four aces to lead the team. Holly and Madilyn Emter each had two aces. King, Wheeler, Wood and Rosteck finished with one ace each.

With the regular season behind them, the Lady Herders now turn all of their attention to the District 5B Tournament, which Big Timber enters as the No. 2 overall seed.

Their No. 2 seed earns the Lady Herders a first-round bye at the tournament, and they await the winner of a match between Jefferson and Whitehall, which play at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

Big Timber will play the winner of that match at 1 p.m. Friday at the Belgrade Special Events Center. The winner of that match plays again Saturday at 11 a.m. with a spot in the district championship match on the line, while the loser plays again at 5:15 p.m. Friday, where a loss can end their season.
