John H. Martin was born April 7, 1932 in Vananda, Montana, to Edward and Caroline Martin. John resided in Othello, Washington. John passed away on April 20, 2021 with his wife Minnie and family at his side at the Hospice House in Kennewick, Washington.

John left school in the eighth grade to help his mother on the family farm milking cows and plowing fields with a team of horses, working along with his father. When John was 21, a horse drove a 2x4 into his back and paralyzed him from the waist down. Having flown to Seattle to undergo back surgery, he was able to walk again after a year.

Later in life, John went into a career in logging in Eureka, Montana where he met and married to Peggy Tipton. They settled into Livingston, where they raised Simmental cattle and became well known for their hay contracting operation in Montana. He also had a 20-sow operation raising registered Duroc hogs.

John and Peggy divorced and he moved to Othello, Washington, where he met and married Minnie in October of 1995. His love for life sparked his next idea which was raising ostriches. Toward the end of his life, he decided to go back into the hog operation raising Herford hogs. John loved farming and raising animals.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Caroline, his three sisters Alice, Vernie and Thelma, his ex-wife Peggy, his son Steven and stepson Robert. John is survived by his wife, Minnie Martin, WA; son John “Jack” Martin (Alaska); daughter Sherri Reed, ID; son Jim Martin, MT; stepdaughters Robyn Hoskinso, WA; Linda Hathcox, WA; Cathy Sanchez, WA; Donna Birkholz, MT; and stepson William Hathcox, WA. John also has 28 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

A memorial will be held at a later date to allow friends and family to pay their respects.
