Joan Horan, a longtime resident of Livingston, Montana, passed away on Nov. 22 in Delmar, New York.

Joan was a retired nurse who moved to Livingston from Syracuse, New York in 1999. She spent many summers working at the Lake Hotel in Yellowstone National Park. She also worked at Denali National Park in Alaska, Glacier National Park, Isle Royale National Park and the Florida Everglades National Park. Joan greatly enjoyed Yellowstone and the many friends she made there. She loved hiking, camping, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, white water rafting and fishing. She was affectionately nicknamed “Grizzly Joan” after she met a grizzly face-to-face while hiking in Yellowstone ... they looked at each other and the bear turned and walked away. She always said her secret was that she wasn’t afraid.

Joan spent her winters staying active as a volunteer at the Stafford Animal Shelter, the Livingston Food Pantry, Loaves and Fishes, Habitat for Humanity and Frontier Nursing Home.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Mackey of Delmar, New York, and her sons, Daniel Horan and his wife, Arlene Horan, James Horan and John Horan, all of Syracuse, New York. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in All Saints Church. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home, 3111 James St., Syracuse, NY 13206.
