Jim Sarrazin inducted in Cowboy Hall of Fame

Jim Sarrazin, 90-year resident of Shields Valley, was formally inducted into the The Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame and Heritage Center Saturday at the Heritage Inn in Great Falls. 

Family members attending the induction ceremony were Terry Sarrazin of West Burlington, Iowa; Joyce Sarrazin; Bill and Lori Sarrazin, Zach Sarrazin; and Barbara and Dennis Dodge. 

The Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame and Heritage Center in Big Timber is to honor our Montana cowboy way of life, American Indiana cultures and collective Montana western heritage. 

 

Spelling bee winners

Seventh-grader Emma Woodruff has won the Shields Valley spelling bee.

Taking second was fifth-grader Remy Sexton; third, eighth-grader Finn Sexton; and fourth, eighth-grader Hannah Butler. 

The students will participate in the county spelling bee at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the Shane Center in Livingston.

Others competing in the Shields Valley spelling bee Tuesday in Clyde Park were eighth grade, Gwen Collins; seventh grade, Milan Moscone and Coby Stallard; sixth grade, Jaeli Jenkins and Andie Estes; and fifth grade Ava Burkes.

 

Books for Bikes

The Books for Bikes program for Shields Valley Elementary students started Tuesday,  Feb. 7, and runs through Tuesday, Feb. 21, when bikes and books will be given away. Students read books to earn certificates for free books and a chance to win a bicycle. The books and bikes will be given at two assemblies in the Wilsall gym Tuesday, Feb. 21. 

The kindergarten through third-grade assembly is at 9 a.m. and the fourth through sixth grade is at 10:30 a.m. 

This event is sponsored by the Masonic Lodge of Wilsall and the Women of Wilsall.

 

Other upcoming events

• The Shields Valley FFA Alumni meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14,  in the Ag room of the high school in Clyde Park. 

• The Shields Valley third grade class has been studying famous inventors. They will have a wax museum of these inventors from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the school gym in Wilsall.

 

Fraud discussion

The Shields Valley Senior Center will host Jennell Huff from the Bank of the Rockies for another roundtable CONversation About Cons discussion at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the monthly potluck dinner at the senior center in Wilsall. 

Elder fraud and exploitation is a growing concern, and Huff will be discussing current issues and laws that are specific to elder fraud. She will be giving information about what to look for, how to prevent and detect fraud, and what to do if it is suspected, as well as discuss current laws in Montana regarding elder fraud and exploitation. She wants to open up a discussion about thoughts, concerns, and even attendees experiences while she shares her own thoughts, concerns, and experiences. Come be a part of the conversation.

CONversations About Cons is presented in conjunction with the American Bankers Association’s Safe Banking for Seniors campaign.

This event is hosted by the Shields Valley Senior Center and Bank of the Rockies.

 

100 birthday

Pearl D’Ewart enjoyed her 100th birthday with about 200 people who came from all across Montana. The party was held at the Wilsall school Saturday. Entertainment was provided by all of the original members of the Ringling 5.

The Wilsall Vets Club held their monthly potluck meeting and card party at the Shields  Valley Senior Center Monday evening.

Terry Sarrazin of West Burlington, Iowa, is a guest of his parents Jim and Joyce Sarrazin this week while visiting family and friends in the area.

• Feb. 9: The junior high boys basketball teams play the Sleeping Giant Middle School at 4:15 p.m. in Clyde Park.

• Feb. 10: The high school basketball teams start playing with the boys junior varsity at 2:30 p.m. in White Sulphur Springs.

• Feb. 11: The high school basketball teams start playing Gardiner with the boys junior varsity at 3 p.m. in Clyde Park. This is senior night. The junior high boys basketball teams play in the White Sulphur Springs Tournament.

• Feb. 14: Third Grade Wax Museum of famous inventors is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Wilsall school gym.
