Gailard ‘Roy’ Smart

Roy Smart died peacefully surrounded by family on Aug. 3, 2018.

He was born June 26, 1928, in Livingston. He served in the Army, attended Montana State and graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. Roy married Marjorie Harvey in 1951 and they celebrated 66 years together before her death in April 2018.

He was the first building inspector for Bozeman, Montana, and served in that capacity in Porterville and Eureka, Calif. A resident of Sacramento since 1964, he retired from the State of California as an administrator for the Department of Housing. Roy and Marge enjoyed world travel, a summer home in Livingston and time with family.

Roy was a long-standing member of his church, as well as Toastmasters, the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gay and Lottie Smart; his sister Billie; and his brother Terry. He is survived by his daughters Sally (Jeff) Howell of Sacramento and Sherry (Bob) Reeve of San Dimas, California; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a scholarship fund at: The Cause Church, 950 Beacon St., Brea, Calif. 92821, Attn: Smart College Scholarship Fund. A memorial service was held on Thursday, Aug. 23 at Faith Presbyterian Church in Sacramento.
