Elk welcome any time

Editor:

First of all, I would like to thank Brad Shultz for his letter to the editor in last Thursday’s edition of The Livingston Enterprise. It is like a breath of fresh spring air to have a Paradise Valley resident speak out in support of the elk. I agree, this is a critical time for the elk, for they are heavy with calves, just getting out of the winter, and numbers are at a dangerous all-time low.

Ranchers irrigate their hay fields up until the heavy frosts into October. Of course the elk are going to use your hay fields. Not fencing the elk out of your property is no different than camping in bear country and leaving your food out. It should be the landowners’ responsibility. The financial burden should not fall on the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. I  enjoy all the wildlife, and they are welcome on my property any time.
