The Gardiner Lady Bruins started off the distric tournament strong against the Lone Peak Big Horns, but struggled in the end, ultimately losing 33-28.

Gardiner maintained the lead for most of the first half. A Lone Peak bucket, followed by one foul shot, brought the score to 16-15 with Gardiner still ahead.

Shots from both teams on each possession kept the score close and ended the first half with Gardiner ahead 18-17.

The girls continued to be neck and neck throughout the second half.

A 2-point bucket from the Big Horns pushed the score to 28-28: a tie game with only 2 minutes to go.

With one minute left in the game, Lone Peak hit a 3-point shot, sending the Big Horns into the lead 31-28.

The final seconds consisted of calculated fouls and a series of shot attempts from the Lady Bruins, but an unforgiving hoop prevented Gardiner from pulling out the win.

Lady Bruin head coach Schalene Darr said it was unfortunate, but she remains hopeful.

“The tournament isn’t over yet,” said Darr.

Top scorers were eighthgrader Sophia Darr with 9 points and Josie Thomas 7 points.

Meanwhile, the Shields Valley Rebels took down Lone Peak 54-46.

Top scorers were Dylan Flatt with 22 points and Milan Moscone with 15 points.
