April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Abuse Support & Prevention Education Network in Livingston is hosting its first annual “Paint the Town Purple” event to help raise awareness and raise funds for updates to ASPEN’s Safe House.

Participants are urged to make a tax-deductible donation to ASPEN and receive a purple light (bulbs or strings) to display in their home, office or business windows during the month of April, an ASPEN news release said.

The lights have been donated by the event sponsors: Livingston’s Ace Hardware, Opportunity Bank, and Northwestern Energy.  Other sponsors are Sweet Grass County Chamber of Commerce and Printing for Less (PFL).

As part of the outreach, ASPEN staff will be at Ace Hardware from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 2, April 9, and April 16. Participants can make a donation, pick up the appropriate lights, and learn more about ASPEN’s work. If you have already made a donation you may bring in your receipt and pick up your lights.

According to the most recent data from the National Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Assault Survey, one in three women and one in four men experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes, with eight out of 10 of these victims knew their assailant, the release said.

Why purple? Purple is a unifying symbol of courage, survival, honor, and dedication to ending relationship abuse, the release said.

“We encourage you to take a photo of your lights and share on Social Media using these hashtags: #purplepatrons #aspenmt #SAAM2021,” the release said.

ASPEN’s mission is to provide direct support services to victims/survivors of domestic and sexual violence and human trafficking and empowers them to create safe and healthy lives for themselves and their families. ASPEN is also committed to breaking the cycle of violence by providing educational and awareness activities in the communities it serves.
