Herders 2-0 with Three Forks win

The Herders improved to 2-0 on the season Friday night, Sept. 4, when they went on the road and defeated Three Forks 49-0 thanks to a dominating defensive effort.

The Herder defense not only didn’t allow a point, they didn’t allow a single passing yard and held the Wolves to 39 total yards on 38 offensive plays.

Three Forks only gained two first downs the entire game and was 1-of-9 on third down conversions. The Herders also won the turnover battle, recovering two fumbles and intercepting a pass.

XC runners drop times in Billings

The Big Timber Sheepherder cross country team didn’t shy away from competition on Sept. 4 when they traveled to Billings for a meet at Amend Park. The Class B Herders ran with a majority of Class AA and A schools.

“It was a great race for us to attend,” head coach Christina Bowden said. “It effects the energy of the race and the energy put forth by the racers.”

Nine out of 10 runners competed for Big Timber. Kate Indreland was sick, so the Lady Herder were not able to post a team score.

Herders celebrate 21-10 victory over Whitehall

The Herder football team opened the 2015 season at home. 

After a tumultuous first quarter, Big Timber took it to Whitehall during the final three quarters to earn a 21-10 win over the visiting Trojans.

Whitehall opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal, and, later in the first quarter, Trojan receiver Braden Larson caught a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lane Buus.

That, however, is all the Trojans would get, as the Big Timber defense shutout Whitehall in the remaining three quarters.

Lady Herders prime with tourney

The Big Timber volleyball team opened their season at a tournament in Columbus during the weekend, and after a slow start in pool play, the Herders rebounded to finish second in the silver bracket.

The tournament was set up with two parts, pool play and tournament play. During pool play, teams played four matches — two sets each to 20 points. The tournament portion of the day was best two out of three sets in which the first two sets were played to 25 points and the final set to 15.

Runners prove strong in Livingston

The Sheepherder cross country team attended their first meet of the season Friday, Aug. 28, in Livingston, and all six of Big Timber’s varsity runners turned in strong times.

“They are in a good place (to start the season),” head coach Christina Bowden said. “The thing the first race always does is show them where their choices up to this point have gotten them, and then we can make goals and adjust from that.

The Big Timber cross country team has an interesting mix of veteran and inexperienced runners as the Herders gear up for their 2015 season.

Six girls and four boys make up the 10-member cross country team. The Big Timber boys feature two returning sophomore runners in Brandon Schwers and Clayton Gano. The boys will also have some new blood this season as they welcome freshmen John Baxter and Jacob Husman.

Head coach Liz Day and the 2015 Big Timber volleyball team are ready to take the next step, and they are talking about it in practice.

The Herders went into last season’s district volleyball tournament as the No. 2 seed but finished fourth in the tournament and failed to advance to the division tournament, a goal this year’s team hopes to accomplish.

“We are adamant to get to divisionals this year,” Day said. “That’s pretty much every day, we’ll talk about that. I think they are pretty dedicated to making it to divisionals.”

Following a 4-4 campaign that saw the Big Timber Sheepherder football team fall one win short of a playoff berth, head coach Bruce Bell believes his team is ready to take the next step as they prepare to embark on their 2015 season.

The Herders had a shot at the playoffs last season, but a loss in the final game of the year dashed their hopes. Big Timber returns six starters on offense, as well as six starters on defense as they try to build on last year.
