ENGLEWOOD, Colo.— Von Miller has signed a blockbuster $114.5 million contract with the Denver Broncos that includes $70 million in guarantees and makes him the highest-paid nonquarterback in NFL history.

The Super Bowl MVP accepted the six-year offer two hours before Friday's deadline, tweeting a photo of himself with the caption "For Life."

MINNEAPOLIS— The Minnesota Lynx have heard it all since they donned black shirts before a game in remembrance of two men who were shot by police and the five Dallas police officers who were killed in an attack last week.

They have been hailed as crusaders for using their platform to start a dialogue about the issue of police violence. They were also told they should just shut up and play ball.

Former Vanderbilt player sentenced to 15 years for dorm rape

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A former Vanderbilt football player was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of taking part in the gang rape of an unconscious female student.

Davidson County Criminal Court Judge Monte Watkins handed down the sentence for Cory Batey after the victim in the case said her life has been shattered as a result of the rape.

Duke facing hole in hoop schedule with Albany backing out

DURHAM, N.C.— Duke has an opening on its men's basketball schedule because of the state law that impacts LGBT people.

The Blue Devils were supposed to play Albany on Nov. 12 as part of the Hall of Fame Tipoff tournament but there's no opponent listed on that day in Duke's schedule that was released Wednesday.

Holly Liapis, spokeswoman for the State University of New York system that includes Albany, says that game won't be played because of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's executive order banning publicly funded, non-essential travel to North Carolina.

LOS ANGELES — LeBron James won five trophies, including best male athlete and best NBA player, at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday night when frivolity gave way to a James-led call to end gun violence and racial profiling.

The show honoring the year's best athletes and sports moments opened on a somber note, with James and fellow NBA stars Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade standing four abreast on stage addressing the recent shootings of blacks by white police officers.

Led by Patrick Reed, Americans rule again at Royal Troon

TROON, Scotland — On a gorgeous, sunny day along the Scottish coast, the Americans resumed their domination of Royal Troon.

Patrick Reed took advantage of the benign conditions Thursday to start the British Open with a 5-under 66, leaving him one stroke ahead of Justin Thomas and 49-year-old Steve Stricker.

Reed got his round going by holing out from 139 yards at the par-4 third hole for eagle. That sparked him to a 5-under 31 on the much easier outward nine, which generally plays downwind and was especially ripe for going low on this day.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tom Brady is down to his last chance, and it's not a very good one.

If the New England Patriots quarterback is to avoid a four-game suspension in the scandal known as "Deflategate," he will have to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to take his case. Only about 1 percent of the appeals submitted to the nation's highest court are accepted, and they tend to be about grand constitutional issues.

Not, you know, deflated footballs.

NEW YORK— Quarterback Tom Brady's last best chance to avoid serving a four-game "Deflategate" suspension to start the new season was flatly rejected Wednesday by an appeals court.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan issued a one-sentence rejection of requests by the National Football League Players Association and Tom Brady to reconsider an April decision that reinstated the suspension.

SAN DIEGO— No matter the names, the AL dominates the All-Star Game in the 21st Century and starts the World Series at home.

Back in 2003, when a "This Time It Counts" sign was put up in right at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field, the stars included Roger Clemens and Hank Blalock. This year, the key names were baseball Royalty: Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez.

And because they came up big Tuesday night, Kansas City would open the World Series at home again if it wins a third straight AL pennant — a big if.

Bach cites 'right to individual justice' in Russian doping

LONDON— International Olympic officials will try to find "the right balance between collective responsibility and individual justice" in dealing with Russian doping allegations ahead of the games in Rio de Janeiro, IOC President Thomas Bach said Wednesday.

Bach spoke in an interview five days before the release of a report by Canadian law professor Richard McLaren into allegations of a state-sponsored Russian doping conspiracy at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.
