Whether you vote absentee or go to the polls Nov. 8 in Montana House District 60, you will be voting for a candidate to represent us locally but also to represent the best interests of all Montanans.

Laurie Bishop is the best candidate to do this. Laurie has raised her family and lived in Livingston for many years. She has a background in education, helping to assure students statewide graduate from high school. She also has business experience as a small business owner in Montana.

Night Owl Run success

Another year has come and gone, and the community of Livingston (along with some faithful running enthusiasts from all over the state and from other states) never ceases to amaze us. On Sept. 9, the eighth annual Night Owl Run succeeded to move close to 350 bodies just a bit over 4 miles on a perfect, weather-accommodating evening. From dozens of cash and prize sponsors to over 100 volunteers lining the course to cheer participants and slow traffic, this event is the epitome of community collaboration and spirit.

The Park County Fair Board has a couple positions open for the board. The deadline is fast approaching, and those interested individuals who are looking to make a difference with the fair and fairgrounds need to apply soon. Applications are available on the county’s website.

I am most distressed about the nice lady that was shot in her trunk with her own gun. As someone who has traveled both coasts, into remote areas and used a rented car for years, a word of caution. I have carried a pistol for many years. My father, a crack shot with any kind of a gun, told me years ago, Patsy, never give up your gun. Get the first shot and use the entire load. If you give up your gun, you are dead.

There are more and more scams than ever before. And no, this is not about politics.

It’s more serious than that.

Everyone knows politicians are good at separating us from our money. But apparently a lot of people — a whole lot of people — do not know it is never a good idea to send money to a stranger on the phone.

And by the way, if your grandson calls from jail, remember this — he needs a kick in the ass, not a money order made out in his name. More on that later.

The recent reopening of stretches of the Yellowstone River comes as a great relief to Montanans, to our small businesses, and to the people whose livelihoods depend on its waters. However, the closing of the 183 miles of the Yellowstone between Gardiner and Laurel in mid-August also serves as a powerful reminder of how fragile our resources are, and how our economies and ecosystems exist in a delicate balance.

Amazed at honesty of citizenry

On Sept. 1 my husband and I checked into a cabin at Yellowstone’s Edge. After unloading, we drove to the Town & Country store for groceries. While inside, I set my checkbook down somewhere, but after a short while realized I had mislaid it. The loss of checks didn’t bother me as much as the $800 inside the check cover!

I reported the incident to the service center after searching but not finding my check book. I left my cell phone number with the clerk and then returned to our cabin.
