When it comes to political affiliation, more Montanans claim they are Independents than claim to be Democrats or Republicans. So you’d think that it would be easy for an Independent to run for office. Not so. The powers that be make it very difficult.
Livingston’s Caron Cooper, who would like to run as an Independent candidate for the Public Service Commission, which protects energy users, needs to collect 3,000 signatures to get on the ballot. Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, or Bernie Sanders needed only 500 signatures.
