Here’s some of what’s new at the library as we string together a early succession of pretty summer days. 

Helen Simonson joins us with “The Summer Before the War,” set in rural England in the summer of 1914. Simonson’s story is atmospheric, establishing the idyllic nature of beautiful countryside and summer life. Yes, there is talk of war, but surely that won’t be allowed to happen. Our knowledge of the impending end of innocence suffuses this engaging story.

Carroll College,  in Helena, named local area students listed below to its 2016 spring semester dean’s list. Park County residents were Ceder Cumin, Holly Galen and Darren Hecker, all of Big Timber, Andres Villalobos, of Clyde Park, and Christopher Emter, of Livingston. 

To be included on the dean’s list a student must receive a 3.5 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale, as well as take at least 12 graded credits in a semester.

The Livingston Depot Museum will host a guest lecture by Steve Jackson, art and photography curator for the Museum of the Rockies, at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 16.  

Jackson will tell the story of photographer Ron Nixon, whose railroad images are featured at the Depot as a 2016 special exhibit, as well as of the digitizing of nearly 12,000 of Nixon’s images into an online collection, a Livingston Depot Foundation press release said. His presentation will be followed by a reception including light refreshments and is free to the public.
