Environmental group outbids Idaho rancher for Idaho grazing lease

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An environmental group that wants to end public-land grazing has outbid a rancher in central Idaho for a grazing lease on state land that includes habitat for bull trout and steelhead.

Western Watersheds Project’s bid of $8,200 last week won the 20-year grazing lease on 620 acres in central Idaho’s Sawtooth Valley in Custer County.

The group and the Idaho Cattle Association say it’s possible other state grazing leases could be sought by other environmental groups.

Man swinging machete killed by deputies

MISSOULA (AP) — A man who was swinging a machete and making lethal threats was shot and killed as Missoula County law enforcement officers tried to deescalate the situation, the sheriff’s office said.

Officers responded to a disturbance northwest of Missoula at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The man did not comply with verbal commands and deputies initially used a “less lethal option” to try to get him to comply, the sheriff’s office said.

That failed and the man continued to pose a lethal threat, officials said.

Ida traps Louisianans, kills power

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Rescuers set out in hundreds of boats and helicopters to reach people trapped by floodwaters Monday, and utility repair crews rushed in, after a furious Hurricane Ida swamped the Louisiana coast and ravaged the electrical grid in the sticky, late-summer heat.

People living amid the maze of rivers and bayous along the state’s Gulf Coast retreated desperately to their attics or roofs and posted their addresses on social media with instructions for search-and-rescue teams on where to find them.

Thousands flee South Lake Tahoe as massive wildfire approaches

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — Thousands of people rushed to get out of South Lake Tahoe as the entire tourist resort city came under evacuation orders and wildfire raced toward the large freshwater lake of Lake Tahoe, which straddles California and Nevada.

Evacuation warnings issued for the resort city of 22,000 on Sunday turned into orders Monday. Vehicles loaded with bikes and camping gear and hauling boats snaked through thick, brown air that smelled of campfire. Police and other emergency vehicles whizzed by.

JEREMIE, Haiti (AP) — U.S. military aircraft are now ferrying food, tarps and other material into southern Haiti amid a shift in the international relief effort to focus on helping people in the areas hardest hit by the recent earthquake to make it through the hurricane season.

Rangers steamrolled by Locomotives in varsity’s return to McLeod

After two years of absence, Park High School Varsity football was back at McLeod Field Saturday night, suffering a 47-0 loss to the Laurel Locomotives.

Fans showed out well on the night, with an enthusiastic student section leading cheers. Even the osprey who built a nest atop one of the stadium lights — shut down for the birds’ safety — contributed to the din, letting out cries from their nest.

Dolphins coach: Team wants players with ‘high character’

MIAMI (AP) — As speculation swirled Monday regarding the Miami Dolphins’ interest in embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson, coach Brian Flores said the team wants players with “high character.”

The Dolphins have declined to confirm or deny reports they have engaged in trade talks to acquire Watson, the Houston Texans’ star who has been accused of sexual assault and harassment in lawsuits filed by 22 women.
