A crowd of about 30 gathered to light the menorah in Depot Rotary Park Monday to celebrate Hanukkah, which started Sunday.

Dovid Lokshin, of Moscow, Russia, and Nissen Eichoran, of Brooklyn, New York, lit the Menorah at Depot Rotary Park.

Lokshin and Eichoran are students in Brooklyn who traveled to Montana to help Rabbi Chaim Bruk of Chabad-Lubavitch of Montana, based in Bozeman, with Hanukkah. 

Chabad-Lubavitch is a branch of Hasidism founded in Russia in the 1700s. Its followers are Orthodox Jews. 

37th Community Christmas Dinner set for Civic Center

The 37th annual Community Christmas Dinner will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25 at the Livingston Civic Center. 

Nearly four decades ago, people in the community saw that some we’re missing out, event organizers said. Many didn’t have friends or family to visit, food to cook, or just a warm place to be. 

The goal of that first dinner was to provide a warm meal and companionship while honoring the birth of Jesus Christ, said Joe Magalsky, who has been involved with the event since the beginning. 

President calls troops ahead of Christmas holiday

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump called members of all five branches of the military stationed across the world to share greetings ahead of the Christmas holiday. 

Speaking Tuesday by video conference from his private club in Florida, where is he is on a more than two-week vacation, Trump said, “I want to wish you an amazing Christmas.” The group included Marines in Afghanistan, an Army unit in Kuwait, a Navy ship in the Gulf of Aden, an Air Force base in Missouri and a Coast Guard station in Alaska.

Yellowstone bison transferred to American Indian reservation

BILLINGS (AP) — US officials were transferring 33 disease-free bison Monday from Yellowstone National Park to an American Indian reservation in Montana as part of efforts to reduce the slaughter of bison that migrate from the park.

Robert Magnan with the Fort Peck Tribes said the shipment was expected to arrive on the northeastern Montana reservation later in the day. 

The shipment included bison and descendants trapped by park administrators under a legal agreement with the state of Montana that’s intended to prevent the spread of the disease brucellosis.
