Once under fire, Pitino, Gophers surging toward NCAA Tourney

MINNEAPOLIS — This time a year ago, Richard Pitino was at the center of a storm in Minnesota. The Golden Gophers were a disaster on the court and a distraction off of it, on their way to a two-win Big Ten season in his third year on the job.

Now the 34-year-old coach walks around campus at the head of a 20-win team that is steamrolling toward an NCAA Tournament berth, and he admits with a tongue-in-cheek sheepishness that the sudden change in the way he is received has taken some getting used to.

DENVER (AP) — Republicans who benefited from rowdy town halls six years ago and harnessed a wave of discontent with Democrats to win seats in Congress are learning a hard lesson this week as they return home: The left is happy to return the favor.

Across the U.S., Democrats and their allies are spending this short congressional recess protesting elected Republican politicians who are avoiding the events that often turn into shouting matches.

Sen. Daines touts Supreme Court nominee amid protest

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Steve Daines arrived Wednesday at the Montana state Capitol to meet with state legislators and tout the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court but found himself surrounded by a swarm of demonstrators demanding the senator convene a town hall.

The event came a day after Daines rescheduled an appearance before state legislators in the House chambers when hundreds of protesters converged at the statehouse to voice displeasure over his support of President Donald Trump's agenda.

Billings woman cited for DUI twice in 12 hours

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A Billings woman is jailed with her bail set at $25,000 after being arrested for driving drunk twice in a period of 12 hours.

The Billings Gazette reports 44-year-old Robia Jane Bedoni was arrested after a traffic stop just after 1 a.m. Monday and again just before 1 p.m. Monday. Both times she had a 15-year-old passenger, which led to two counts of felony criminal endangerment.

Court records say Bedoni's blood-alcohol level was 0.248 after the first stop and 0.205 after the second. The limit at which a person is considered legally drunk is 0.08.

12-year-old leads highway patrol in southern Montana pursuit

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Authorities say a 12-year-old boy is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase with a loaded gun in his vehicle in southern Montana.

The Billings Gazette reports that the chase began in Billings on Tuesday after a trooper spotted a vehicle driving erratically.

Montana Highway Patrol Capt. Keith Edgell says authorities followed the boy on Interstate 90 until Laurel, where he drove on multiple streets to get away from officers.

Colstrip owner pushes for tax break to keep plant units open

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Talen Energy is pushing Montana lawmakers for a tax break worth millions to keep two units of the coal-fired Colstrip power plant open, with one Republican leader saying Tuesday the units could close within the year without some form of assistance.

The Atlanta Falcons may not have been victorious in the Super bowl earlier this month, but the team’s owner, Arthur Blank, has won a place in the hearts of many nonprofit organization members in Park County.

Blank, whose business credentials, in addition to owning the Falcons, include co-founding Home Depot, has a strong connection to Park County. He owns the Mountain Sky Guest Ranch in Paradise Valley and recently purchased another valley ranch, the 6,300-acre West Creek Ranch near Emigrant.
